Messi continued, “This is a tremendous opportunity and together we will continue to grow this beautiful project. I have never played for a club team outside of Europe.

“I’m very eager to start helping here in my new home. The idea is to work together to achieve the objectives we set.”

Beckham commented on signing a player who is tipped to win another Ballon d’Or this year, saying: “Ten years ago, when I started my adventure to develop a new team in Miami, I declared that I dreamed of bringing the finest players in the world to this magnificent city.

“[I wanted] players that shared my desire to develop football in the United States and leave a lasting legacy in this sport that we both adore for the next generation.
